ADDERBURY RUNNING CLUB

In late 2007, local runners, Jimmy Young, Gareth Stapleton and Tony Gill, chatting at a party, decided it would be a great idea to organise a village half marathon! In order for this to happen it was necessary for Adderbury to have its own running club as this would enable the event to take place under UKA rules and insurance. Adderbury Running Club was duly formed and the first Three Spires Half Marathon and 10k took place in 2008, together with children’s races.

The event was a great success and became an annual event, without a break, until  2019. A relaunch is being planned for 2020. Any surplus profits from the event were and will be used to support local causes and projects.

On the first club runs there were as many dogs as humans! But the running club has prospered and grown.

The club aims to cater for runners of all abilities with weekend and weekday runs and to keep costs low. We are passionate about encouraging health (both physical and mental) and friendship through fitness

The club is currently increasing the numbers of trained run leaders to support our runners in achieving their personal goals, be that a first 5k, half marathon, marathon or simply running for pleasure. We have supported Christopher Rawlings Primary School offering an after school running club where children learned running techniques and used local paths for 2-4k runs. We have recently supported the successful ArcLites Run Together programme and are currently running a 12 week beginners course.

We organise social events to enable runners to meet socially – these include, evening get-togethers and breakfast runs. Club awards for the Club Championship and for service to the club are presented at our annual dinner.

Currently, club runs take place on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. When possible these are off-road, making full use of our beautiful local countryside, trails and footpaths. The club also encourages and supports club members at Banbury parkrun on a Saturday morning.

The club is affiliated to England Athletics, and is run by an elected committee
